Here's something, to me anyway, that I think is important to keep in mind when it comes to synthetics. Synthetics are compounds formed through a chemical process by human agency, as opposed to those of natural origin.
I prefer and will choose 'natural' over 'synthetic' every time.
I've read articles by opponents of MMJ that have said why do you need to legalize MMJ when these 'synthetic' products already exist? The answers are here in the article above. Marinol, Nabilone, and Rimonabant do not contain all of the compounds that are found in natural cannabis making them less effective.
 
Scientists Discover Marijuana Helps Heal Broken Bones, & Even Makes Them Stronger

A marijuana chemical known as cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) helps fractures heal faster and even make the bones stronger than they were before, according to a study conducted by researchers fromTel Aviv Universityand Hebrew University and published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
CBD has no psychotropic effects.


“We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue,” researcher Yankel Gabet said. “After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future.”


BONES CONTAIN CANNABINOID RECEPTORS
The researchers inflicted mild femoral fractures on rats, then injected some of them with CBD, and others with CBD plus tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the ingredient that causes the marijuana high). They then evaluated the healing of the rats, comparing them with rats who had not received any marijuana chemicals.

The researchers found that rats injected with CBD had the same effect whether or not it was accompanied by THC.




“We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing,” Gabet said.

“Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”

The study supported the same team’s prior findings that the body contains receptors that respond to cannabinoid compounds, and that these receptors are not confined to the brain.

“We only respond to cannabis because we are built with intrinsic compounds and receptors that can also be activated by compounds in the cannabis plant,” Gabet said.

The prior study found that the skeleton contains cannabinoid receptors that stimulate bone formation and inhibit bone loss. The new study seems to confirm these findings.




MEDICAL MARIJUANA BENEFITS “UNDENIABLE”
The study is part of a growing body of research into the medical benefits of marijuana compounds, including CBD. The findings may lead to new research into ways that marijuana could be used to treat osteoporosis or other bone diseases.

“The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point,” Gabet said.

“While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies, it is clear that it is possible to detach a clinical therapy objective from the psychoactivity of cannabis. CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity.”

The list of benefits to medical marijuana continues to grow. It is currently used primarily for chronic pain, to reduce side effects of chemotherapy and to improve appetite in AIDS patients. It has also shown promise in regulating blood sugar and slowing the progression of HIV. It is also being researched as a treatment for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Studies have shown that CBD suppresses seizures, stops the mestastasis of many aggressive cancers and may even kill leukemia cells.

A 2013 study in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that CBD was just as effective as a popular antipsychotic drug in the treatment of schizophrenia and paranoia, but without the dangerous side effects. Other studies have confirmed the effectiveness of CBD as a safe antipsychotic.

Although marijuana remains technically illegal under U.S. federal law, it is legal to use CBD for research or for limited medical functions in 17 U.S. states. The medical use of marijuana itself is legal in 23 other states.

The federal government still classifies marijuana as having “no currently accepted medical use.” Yet even this may be starting to change. The FDA recently approved CBD extracts as an experimental treatment for Dravet syndrome, a rare form of childhood epilepsy. Preliminary clinical trials are now going forward.

11 AMAZING WAYS CANNABIS CAN PREVENT ILLNESS

Most people are familiar with the healing potential of medical cannabis for people who are already ill. Dr. Wenk’s suggestion is all fine and good if you happen to live in a part of the world where consuming cannabis is legal (although the jury’s out on whether smoking is the best form of ingestion), but for most people, this isn’t the case. So then what? Luckily the non psychoactive cannabinoid CBD is also found in industrial hemp which, due to having next to no traces of THC, is legal in most countries and has been shown by scientists to also have neuroprotective potential.
It all makes for a pretty convincing case that regular, low level cannabis consumption could prevent many of the diseases that threaten our health as we get older. And who knows, one day we may indeed just take it like any other health boosting supplement or vitamin.
 
Is Cannabis the Next Kale? One Chef Aims to Prove It's Even More Nutritious


When nutritionists advise that you rotate the greens in your diet, we don't think this is what they had in mind. But good news for marijuana fans everywhere: Ongoing trials suggest that the cannabis plant might be even more nutrient-dense than kale.

Marijuana more nutritious than kale?! (Minds blown.) Is this for real, or did we just indulge in too many edibles?

Let's get to the bottom of this. More than a decade ago, Payton Curry left behind his life as a chef at Michelin-starred San Francisco restaurants to teach classes in the craft of cooking the non-psychoactive parts of the cannabis plant—the components that target pain relief and don't get you high, like THC does. He's now created a company called Flourish that works with labs in California and Arizona to develop food products targeted at easing the pains of stomach disorders.

The current trials are for raw cannabis juice, which he hopes can be introduced at select California medical dispensaries before the state's recreational shops are permitted to open in 2018. "It's full of phytonutrients that you won't find in kale or spirulina or anything like that," Curry said. Phytonutrients may help ward off diseases like cancer and keep your body working properly.

Cannabis juice also has probiotic benefits, like kombucha, sauerkraut, and yogurt, and supports a healthy immune system and metabolism. "And it's great when you tell people with stomach ailments how something as simple as this juice can put a pep in their step by offering a more positive environment in the pH of their stomach," Curry said. "It's not making any claims of curing this or that, it's simply offering a probiotic-rich environment to your stomach, like yogurt would. Digestion is the key to our life, and this juice is something we are very focused on as a kitchen and as a lab for those reasons."

Cannabis juice is also high in vitamins, minerals, essential oils, and antioxidants like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, Curry explained, adding that they tested kale juice against raw cannabis juice.

Ready to get your five-a-day? One major stumbling block that could prevent everyone from ditching kale and declaring cannabis the next "it" vegetable is that cannabis has a very harsh and earthy taste (so we've heard...). So that might be a tough sell to big box grocery stores and gym juice bars. Still, with eight states having legalized marijuana and more expected, we're guessing a new boutique juice movement is underfoot and will only continue to grow like weeds.
 
Cannabis Cleans Up Nuclear Radiation and Toxic Chemical Waste

This farmer is growing hemp to save his soil from toxic chemical waste.

Europe’s largest steel mill in the city of Taranto, Italy, used to produce over 10 million tons of steel every year, 40% of all the steel made in Italy. It currently employs about 12,000 people.


The local economy of Taranto, population 200,000, is almost entirely reliant on the steel mill, which is one of the biggest and most deadly polluters of anywhere in the Mediterranean.

The plant is a notorious source of dioxin and dust from the plant is believed to be the reason why Taranto has a lung cancer rate 30% higher than the national average. The plant is so toxic, farmers are forbidden from raising livestock within a 20 kilometer radius of the plant and in 2008, the government ordered the slaughter of thousands of sheep and other animals that were found to have excessively high levels of dioxin.

The area could also be making a lot of money off of tourists because of its nice beaches and pastoral farmland, but the steel mill keeps potential visitors away.

The mill is currently under government control. Health officials ordered the mill be partially shut down, yet the move was blocked by government authorities, and the police partially occupied the plant as part of a criminal investigation, and its owners were ultimately arrested and jailed for committing “environmental disaster”, a serious crime in Italy. Yet the mill still continues to operate, producing much less steel than it once had.

Vincenzo Fornaro’s farm is less than a mile away from the steel mill. Over a decade ago, his entire flock of 600 sheep had to be killed. Since then, he’s been forbidden from raising livestock or crops for food. So instead, Vincenzo Fornaro has decided to grow weed. He doesn’t grow pot to smoke or sell, instead he grows it to pull toxins from the steel mill out of his soil.

Fornaro has planted huge stands of industrial hemp on his farm. He is using a tactic called “phytoremediation”. This tactic uses plants to remove heavy metals, radioactive material, and other bad stuff from the earth.

Industrial hemp has been used to clean up deadly pollutants before. The most famous use of industrial hemp for phytoremediation was near the site of the deadly nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, Ukraine. In the mid-1990s, a company named Phytotech worked with researchers and a Ukraine-based seed bank to plant thousands of hemp plants in and around Chernobyl.

Phytoremediation is a relatively new process, but it is very helpful.

Considering there are tens of thousands of polluted sites across the United States in desperate need of safe cleanup, this process could be the answer to a lot of our issues. Nothing can be built on polluted sites until they are cleaned, meaning these sites sit and continue to pollute the earth until something is done. Billions are spent each year in efforts to clean up toxic soil, and the time for phytoremediation is now.


According to researchers from Colorado State University, hemp is extremely effective in removing the toxic element cadmium from soils. This is convenient because cadmium contamination is everywhere. It is seen in fossil fuels, old-school pesticides and many other byproducts of human civilization.

Since hemp grows quickly, has deep roots, and doesn’t appear to be stunted by pollution, hemp is one of the best plants to use in phytoremediation.

Another amazing thing about using hemp for this process is that, once it has removed toxic chemicals from the soil, it can still be put to use. Hemp can be converted into oil for lubrication or other industrial purposes, it can be used as insulation, and it can even be used as paper or construction material. The most heavy metals appear to accumulate in the leaves of hemp, so it is best to use the stalks or seeds.

While it might not be a good idea to eat or wear hemp products culled from areas where nuclear waste once glowed, this hemp is still safe to use in other applications.

In Italy, where hemp is being grown to detox the land or the toxic chemicals released by the mill, activists are actually beginning to use the hemp to replace steel! Activists have built a brand new apartment building completely made out of hemp fiber.

Bees Absolutely Love Cannabis & It Could Help Restore Their Populations

New research out of Cornell University that’s been published in Environmental Entomology, shows that humans aren’t the only fans of cannabis. The recent findings also compliment a study published last year at Colorado State University that discovered the same thing, that bee’s love cannabis. The recent legalization of hemp in the United States seems to be having a very positive effect on multiple bee populations.


The Cornell study states:

We identified all bee visitors to the species level and found that hemp supported 16 different bee species. Landscape simplification negatively impacted the abundance of bees visiting hemp flowers but did not affect the species richness of the community. Plant height, on the other hand, was strongly correlated with bee species richness and abundance for hemp plots with taller varieties attracting a broader diversity of bee species. Because of its temporally unique flowering phenology, hemp has the potential to provide a critical nutritional resource to a diverse community of bees during a period of floral scarcity and thereby may help to sustain agroecosystem-wide pollination services for other crops in the landscape. As cultivation of hemp increases, growers, land managers, and policy makers should consider its value in supporting bee communities and take its attractiveness to bees into account when developing pest management strategies.
The authors go on to emphasize:

Bees provide essential pollination services in both natural and agricultural systems; yet, both wild and managed bees have been adversely impacted by numerous characteristics of large-scale, intensified agriculture, including the widespread use of chemical pesticides and insecticides, persistent pathogens and parasites, and the loss of seminatural nesting habitat and plant diversity (Goulson et al. 2015, Dicks et al. 2016). Landscape-scale loss of natural areas and plant diversity, a defining characteristic of intensive agriculture, occurs as a consequence of the increased size and connectivity of areas devoted to agricultural production (Meehan et al. 2011). Habitat loss associated with agricultural land-use change imposes nutritional stress on bee communities (Naug 2009) by reducing the diversity of floral resources and imposing temporal gaps in resource availability (Di Pasquale et al. 2016). Changing land use patterns, therefore, threaten the sustainability of the pollination services that our agricultural systems rely upon.
With the recent legalization of hemp in the United States, more pollen sources are popping up for bees. which is an encouraging thought.

Hemp flowers late in the summer releasing an abundance of pollen during a period of native and agricultural floral dearth (Dalio 2012, Koh et al. 2016). As a result, hemp pollen may offer a vital subsistence resource to bees at a point in the season when they are resource-limited
The study goes on to cite multiple studies that have documented the importance of hemp pollen in supporting a diverse community of bees, especially during times of scarcity. This is a theme emphasized throughout the entire paper, the fact that it has strong potential to enhance pollinator populations.

The study concludes:

Hemp is a high pollen producing crop flowering during a period of floral resource scarcity and supports a diverse array of bees in the northeastern U.S. landscape. The rapid expansion of hemp production in the United States (Schluttenhofer and Yuan 2017) may have significant implications for agroecosystem-wide pollination dynamics. The potential for hemp to serve as a floral resource for bees is influenced by landscape composition, the height of hemp plants, and temporal factors. Growers, extension agents and policy makers should consider risks to bees as pest management practices are developed for this crop (Cranshaw et al. 2019).
The Takeaway
