Tips Reclaim - What does it tell you about your technique and is it worth the hassle

I'm relatively new to concentrates and have been collecting since the very beginning.

It seems to accumulate fairly quickly.

Does this tell me that I'm doing something wrong? (too hot, too cold, etc)

& while I'm asking, do you even bother collecting and if so, what do you do with it?

Preface by saying there's a big jar of reclaim and other waste collected over several years in the freezer "for emergencies." Don't expect it will ever be used.

By reclaim, do you mean only vaporized concentrate that has re-condensed on your rig? This process is essentially similar to distillation (albeit without fractionation), so there needn't be anything wrong with it, if your gear is kept clean. (Some use "reclaim" to refer to any waste - spatter, washes, etc; if you "reclaim" carbon buildup, you'll lower the overall quality.) It's decarbed and doesn't taste especially good, IMO, but it's otherwise fine with lots of remaining activity.

To reduce the amount of reclaim you produce, you can remove restrictions in the air-path where if collects. As you shorten and increase the diameter of the air-path, you decrease the surface area on which reclaim can re-condense, so more vapor gets to your lungs. Don't think it has too much to do with temperature, but higher temps might help reduce the amount. It will also inactivate terpenes, reducing flavor and entourage effects. You could also try filtering through hot water. The water and glass will be warmer, so you'll decrease the temperature drop from the nail or banger. Hot water also makes its filtration more effecient (but not as cool, obviously).

Whether it's worth the hassle depends on supply and demand. If you have plenty of first-rate supply, there's less demand for reclaim. It also depends on whether you like edibles/topicals. That's really all that reclaim is good for, IMO. There's the sub-par flavor, but even if you're careful, it likely won't be quite as clean as your first run. Your gut is much better at dealing with impurities than your lungs, so oral administration is generally a more forgiving route.

Almost all of mine accumulates in the base of the nail. I use a torch heated domeless Ti nail as my DD & strictly cold start (the nail was designed for this)...so it doesn't make it into the stem or drip into the glass. It has the color/ texture of dark pine tar...not all that objectionable.

I imagine the heating/ cooling process is to account for this as the nail doesn't stay hot enough to drip? My glass really doesn't get foggy at all until after many sessions.

As for cleaning, I used to wash it directly in ETOH but found myself recycling the solution through my glass to clean with and the resulting evaporated sludge is really not something I want to eat.....it tastes OK (tiniest of samples) but looks disgusting. T
Obviously the easiest thing to do with it is toss it, but considering the volume and effort I think I'll try to filter it as you suggested & in the future try to keep the better, cleaner stuff away from my dry herb bong. That should help.

Also been trying to preclean the nail by leaving it standing in an old concentrate jar on a heat register to get it to seep out ....then scraping it out thereby recovering the better looking stuff. It should save on solvent and maybe provide a cleaner product. It sounds like a lot of work, but not really any more than normal ato keep the pots and pans in good working order.

ETOH extracted reclaim. Not as vile as I would've expected.

I'm guess roughly about a gm. Anyone have personal experience with dosing on this stuff?

Thinking of disolving into warm butter.

Is that a tincture or pure oil?
That's A lot of oil to me, any idea of the mg
Year supply!!!!...........maybe more

What are the plans for it
I bought some crumble to make a tincture, never did a concentrate tincture before

Of course I'm not jealous if it is indeed all oil.........much
It's a couple three grams of alcohol 'extracted' reclaim dissolved in canola oil.

My routine is to do a rough cleaning by scraping out the big reclaim boogers and then washing the nail (titanium, obviously). The solution evaporates off, dissolve in oil and filter.

I have no idea how it will work. But it doesn't look too gross and has absolutely no odor. I need to commit and just use it.....with the ability to give up the rest of the day for either couch lock or nausea.

consuming reclaim is kinda like watching porn with other people... there's something not right and uncomfortable about it. Especially vaping it for some reason more than eating or even smoking it... vaping I guess just seems a little more personal.

(no judgement at all, as I've had plenty and will continue to do so... it's just a feeling)

There is no way in hell I'd vape reclaim. That's junkie type behavior there.

Taking it orally should be no more taxing on my body than any other edible out there... which utilizes some extraction and activation process. And I doubt it's any more risky than inhaling vapors from raw herb or extracts of possible dubious origins.

This is essentially heat extracted (condensation) product. .My expectation of a worst case scenario is it will taste nasty...maybe make me heave.

Stay tuned.

Attempting to learn thin layer chromatography to test my edibles, anybody do this with reclaim?
I have the vape tincture to test but not before I am confident performing the test and accurately reporting results
Need my old chem teacher to stand there and constantly remind me to check my work and my calculations:thinker:
Who needs self esteem!

Made brownies.

Taste was fine, tho it did leave that distinctive concentrate taste on the tip of my tongue. Far better than any cannabutter cookies that I've had. No odor either. None of that skunkiness.

My only regret with the product was that I should've at least halved the oil that I added to the mix. That feeling you get when you've done too much? That was me after a very small portion. It's going to tak forever to eat it all and I'm actually a bit afraid to give it away....it might be a bit much for the light weights that I would offer it too.

I recently had a jar of reclaim from glass. It's been used and reused, pretty messy-looking stuff. I did allow the alcohol to evaporate and now I have this amount of black oil in a glass bowl. Is that what you did @Basement Farmer? I'm somewhat afraid to do anything with it, it looks like RSO. But, I know it ain't! It does sound like you had some luck adding it to brownies? It's clean oil, no plant matter. What do you think?

Just trying to understand the terminology here
Reclaim is leftover concentrate from previous heating
Is this an oil?

If all the alcohol is evaporated

I would clarify some butter
Boil some water in a pan, remove from the stove
Place the bowl with the reclaim in just enough of the boiled water to warm the glass but not to submerge
Once the reclaim seems to loosen remove from the water
Take a little reclaim and a little clarified butter and give them a mix to see how it holds up
If it mixes well then pour warm clarified butter into the glass bowl and give it a thorough mix
All the alcohol has to be evaporated
The butter could be used straight in brownies
Have done a similar recipe, just find a recipe and pour that amount of clarified butter into the glass bowl with the reclaim
I do a lot of edibles so this is just a suggestion

Any thoughts on how much the reclaim would be decarbed?

I can fix the concentrate taste

Reclaim can be just leftover oil on your class stem from flowers you’ve vaprized. I’ve had a lot resin on my Solo and my Enano stem before and just used it to stir my hot cocoa. That’s a good way to do some cleaning without the hassle. It takes a pretty dirty stem to get the benefits.

I settled on this method of reclaim as the best. Use cream on top for the fat content. You can use whole milk with melted chocolate.

Hot Chocolate Recipe - Served in White Mug with whipped Cream On Top

Awesome
Can you relate your experience
Curious about what effects you may have felt
Trippy, sedated, slightly elevated
