Lunacy What Car Should I Buy?

@Shredder I had a 340 in a late 70s AMX. That was a bit of a short wheelbase rocket, and tricky to drive on wet streets as it wanted to do donuts everywhere. Ditto for dry streets, with just that little extra effort...

I knew a guy who had a balanced and blueprinted 340 in an older dodge valliant. He won a trophy every week at the local drag strip. His brother totaled it, and I got his headers, high-rise intake manifold, carb, tires, rims all for a song.

I had already driven it across the country and put a lot of wear and tear on it. Then after adding the parts I blew a rear end, u joints, and tranny in about a year, lol. I loved it and hated it
 
I had a 72 cuda with a 340, not a hemi, but it was still quick. I have a picture somewhere, when I bought it in 74. I was leaning against it and had on purple pants and a Paisley print shirt with long hair, think Austin Powers, lol.

We're more into comfort now. I have a country Cadillac (4wd Chevy pickup) and my wife drives a blue whale (Chevy awd traverse). 4 wd is pretty much needed where we live.
I'm now in a 4wd too
Turning it I to an off-road camping truck

very nice on the 340, always wanted a Cuda (not a mechanic but can appreciate well built muscle cars) I hear ya on the comfort, i'm a big fan of wagons, particularly with the AWD action. I have a 60lbs mutt so Cargo space is critical when searching for a ride.
would still b fun putting the 'sound' of a muscle car into an Electric Vehicle, haha

Yea my old ford was "fun" to drive in the wet too
Taking off from lights and turning in wet was always slippery
It could do it in the dry too though....lol
 
Haven't driven the Peugeot, but might look into it if the Solo doesn't work out. Ready to test drive a pre-production model, but currently, there's no shop to service it in this part of the country. It's too bad - the PPSs are even leaner than the production model, with no air conditioner, power steering or breaks ~1,600 lbs.

When owning a frenchy it helps to have to have a specialist mechanic. My baby sees no one but Renotech. When your mechanic sets up track days for customers it tells me a lot about them standing by their work.
 
I prefer to do most of the maintenance on my cars myself
Lucky enough to have a mate who used to be a mechanic if it's a job too big to do myself and we do together

My dad's friend from uni/work, her husband works at the Toyota dealer and he gets discount cars and maintenance - he does his own work at home because most of the work is done sub standard by apprentices with no quality control

Holden has a class action being taken out against them a couple of year back for rip off prices and bad work in the workshops

Most mechanics I know have bad stories of what bosses have told them to do to ensure return custom
When you do find a good and genuine one it is a relationship worth keeping

When I had my Subaru I took it to the dealer for a problem. They determined it had a dirty fast idle selenoid. And it was $450 to replace it. They said it was not their policy to try to repair it.

I declined and it took me all of 20 minutes to clean it. Everything with Subaru service was crazy expensive.

It sucks for people who don't know how to diagnose what is wrong with their car even if they can't do the work

And with a new car you are stuck using the dealership/factory mechanic to not void warranty
This is how they rort a lot of people

But in this day and age they get many men too
I know heaps of blokes who know catch phrase words and have a conversation, but they have no idea what any of the things are/do
But yes, I have helped a few female friends out of bullshit diagnosis from mechanics

We have a Pedders 14 point safety check thing here
Big company makes good suspension stuff and shocks etc

I have taken my car in to get an inspection and then been told heaps needed fixing
Myself and my mechanic mate did work on stuff that needed it and knew others didn't
Took it back a different time
They said all the things needed changing even though we had just done the work

You absolutely are not stuck using dealer/factory mechanics. What a fallacy. Now if you buy a new car it is often easier to use manufacturer capped price servicing especially if it is a common car but plenty of mechanics do log book servicing. Now finding a good one is another story.

You can not just use any old mechanic

Lmafo at going to lubemobile, Repco, Ktas, ultratune or any of those and expecting good service - friends.have worked for half of these and get told to do everything from mismatched sparkplugs to not bothering to change fluids

Most of them are dodgy

If you are a mechanic yourself or live on a farm/in the bush and do work yourself as no mechanic about and there's no time to wait, but don't have an up to date ticket or business you can't do the work without voiding warranty as you can't sign the book

For any warranty work you absolutely MUST do it with the dealer

Also if you buy your parts yourself you usually always save money even if paying someone to put them in
If you don't use what the car company deem as quality parts they will and DO void your warranty

I have a friend who works at a truck parts company and I get parts through them
The brand's are not known but top quality
A new car company would argue I have not used known quality brands

This is how the company's makes their money doing lifetime servicing and fooling people
Capped servicing is another rort as the parts used are triple and sometimes up to 6 times what you could pay elsewhere
Thus the class actions being taken against holden and Toyota

Like everything in life what the rules are and how they are enforced and play out practically are very different things


Essentially if you don't want a shit fight with a car company you are stuck with them or their mates, and then you are usually given sub standard work and ridiculous prices on parts and labour
If you are lucky enough to not be ripped off with lies

You are allowed to do what you like
But it isn't going to be your easiest route if need a warranty claim later
Especially an issue if you are not mechanically minded and don't know shite
As with any mechanic like mentioned above

I choose to do my own work and at least I know it's been done properly
