COVID-19

For all we know, we may avert even greater catastrophe as a result.
Yes. The universe moves in mysterious ways.
Saskatchewan has few cases so far. (Correct? Recall a post about Saskatoon berries.) Closing the border should help keep it that way
You have a very good memory! Things tend to move slowly into the prairies. I don't know if it's the extreme winter conditions or that people just don't go out as much as those in more temperate areas. Maybe there is less movement in and out of the province so there less exposure.
I spent my youth in the prairies and access to Saskatoon berries is definitely a treat that I miss now that I'm much farther East in the province of our fair Capital. Our virus numbers are the highest in Canada. But, as I've said, I'm reasonably isolated in a rural area and live in the forest. I will avoid going out or travelling to the big cities, at least in the foreseeable future.

Careful, you can overdue it with selenium. Always grab a handful of Brazil nuts from the bulk section on grocery days.
I always keep selenium suppliments on hand and it is part of my virus prevention protocol. I also buy Brazil nuts regularly and pop three in my mouth every morning to get my daily maintenance dose of selenium.

Glad I slowed my roll. Before I placed that order for Brazil nuts or Selenium supplements, I looked around online and in my cupboard. Well my everyday multivitamin has more Selenium per capsule then an 200 mcg supplement. So I'll only indulge in Brazil nuts say once a week.

Our gov here are smug and slow
First said all good go to the footy
Next day shut down gatherings
Now emergency shutdowns but kids in public school still meant to go
Ridiculous excuse that it puts people at risk having kids with grandparents
But let's wait till the teachers are all sick and kids are carrying it to close schools and send them home to spread it

Backwards thinking from people with kids in private schools that choose to shut down coz they aren't gov run
The rich will cope

Dickheads hoarding toilet paper and food causing the poor, disabled and old to go without

Hopefully they shut schools down soon
Illegal to have more than 100 indoors and 500 outdoors
But schools stay open
Go scomo keep ignoring other countries saying they waited too long
We know your kids and most politicians kids are in private schools which are closing by their own decisions
Universities are closing by choice
Keep the public schools open though....

As for vaping I see no need to stop unless you feel sick and need to take a break as per usual

Otherwise vaping won't give it to you or make you susceptible

Definitely wouldn't be sharing vapes ATM though

I try to stay away from people ATM and breathe out around ppl in shops lol

Stock up on weed food and tp (not hoarding, just a week or so worth at a time) and ignore the world for a while

Stay safe and clean ppl

Asthmatics stay away from ppl

Lucky I dislike most ppl anyway and isolation isn't such a bad thing for me

I am stocked on weed so happy on that count

Qld police have intelligently stopped RBT and MDT ATM to prevent infection spreading

Our wonderful NSW gov that I share most of the sniffer dog posts from are charging ahead though making ppl blow on machines and testing still risking both the public and the police health

Heads up their bumholes.....

Im liking the idea of jumping in the car and heading bush again for a while away from everyone

Continue life as normal just take sanitary and isolation precautions....pretty simple.

As an introvert I can live with that.

I think I have enough herb to get thru this too...

That said, I'm financially and physically positioned to make it to the other side relatively unscathed. My heart goes out to those many who are not as fortunate.

That selenium article (taken with a healthy pinch of salt) is interesting and compelling. I have a B.S. in Animal Science and back in the mid 80's there was a big push for including it in trace supplements..... I'll have to read it more fully.

The joke around my house is that I invented social distancing lol.... and I have no issues with staying isolated. I saw the writing on the wall a couple weeks before the panic set in and restocked my pantry (it had diminished greatly during my post surgical recuperation), re-upped my herb and concentrates and got essentials taken care of in anticipation. And now FINALLY have my family on board with being careful.

Pretty much everything is shut down here; from schools to shopping malls and restaurants. And I can feel the 'shelter in place' coming. And I am fine with it. We need to stem this from getting to the numbers they're predicting. Last night I saw a report that predicts 2.2 million people in the U.S. alone dying from this. Those numbers are staggering and we do need to take this very seriously. I'm starting a supplement protocol to boost my immune system and doing everything I can to keep things healthy around here. Time will tell if it hits my family or not.

I've been telling my more social friends that this is a time to reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones. To slow down... and appreciate the small things in life. To do some of those things you've been saying you don't have time to do around the house. I know I have a 'honey do' list that's got chores on it that are so old I don't even own the stuff anymore lol....

Hopefully there will be some sort of viable relief package and the banks and utility companies will work with those who are hardest hit by this financially.

Stay safe and healthy everyone...

Surprised the coronavirus wasn't weaponized. A little late for it now, but before widespread travel restrictions, a deliberate attempt to spread the virus could have overwhelmed any country's response. Just fill an airplane with sick people and have them spread out when it lands. Maybe next time.

Tbh I've been waiting for the conspiracy theories to start on this already

That death rate is based statistically upon us not doing anything to stop its spread, but it doesn't diminish the seriousness of this outbreak at all.

People are going to die and I always take the time to remind those who think it's no big deal that it will be a big deal if it effects someone they care about....

As a healthcare wage slave who has a background in infectious diseases it's easy for me to envision this becoming a very real crises. It's not critical yet but it very easily will be if people disregard the precautionary measures.

Yup it's about people doing their part to prevent the spread
And helping each other instead of hoarding so the disadvantaged miss out and suffer

For sure

It's so simple and logical it's really difficult to understand why anyone would have a problem with it.....yet there are still a few who don't seem to get it.....people that I'd expect to know better.

If there is a silver lining to all of this maybe we've learned some important lessons as a society?.......probably not. We'll go right back doing the same stupid shit once it passes.

I believe there is good in this as there is in everything. It’s definitely re-aligning some peoples belief systems and as others have mentioned it’s bringing a divided country together.

A friend sent me this, for anyone unsure why it’s more serious then the seasonal flu:

Edit: I don't know who authored this. Perhaps a microbiologist or infectious disease specialist. but I researched several of these statements and found enough truth that I wanted to share.

This is the best explanation so far:

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.

#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

I'm not disagreeing with you yet that is a slippery slope to go down.
Bio weaponry is nothing new, remember the Seige of Caffa? 13th Century Crimea which could be argued is how the bubonic Plague began, Mongols would catapult dead diseased bodies at the Tartars across the fortified walls causing infection within their population however the Mongols were also infected by the Seige, spreading it from the Caffa port thru Constantinople, thru to Italian ports and so on.
Unit 731 is also an interesting part of tactical pathogenic history to go down if one feels inclined. (curious recently Shinzo Abe photo op sitting in a P 4 jet with those exact numbers)

Tbh I've been waiting for the conspiracy theories to start on this already

Doesn't Wuhan have a BSL-4 lab? Dealing with
The world's most lethal pathogens on earth?
I would say 80% online is disinfo/misinfo on this, Their are so many moving parts to all this, tough to say really where to pull the thread. There is some speculation (I'll have to find the source) that CV19 was modified with HIV proteins speculated by University of New Delhi and Institute of Technology lab findings. As @Disrupt said its closing the barn door after the cows out at this point.

:tinfoil:

I believe that too many policymakers don't truly understand the severity or the science.

For example, shutting down restaurants after 8pm and/or only allowing take-out. The virus does not know time, it does not know a charitable act from a selfish act, it does not know location or one person from another. Take out food can very easily still have the virus on the food, the box it came in or on the hands of the vendor handing it to you. I understand that our culture wants to be understanding to people, finances, and be culturally reasonable. But all we are doing is trying to solve a transmission issue with a wet and previously used band aid.

There is a belief now that much of the spread comes from people who are asymptomatic and of course it can remain on many surfaces for substantial periods of time. It doesn't have to be a pale, wobbly person coughing in your face.

I truly hope the curve doesn't get steeper. But society here is not really helping things.

Not really to add any fuel to this subject (which is dicey)...but the PRC Army pretty much runs all of the enterprises in China, so I wouldn't think that a research facility be considered all that abnormal. To be locatedwhere many of the annual flu pandemic strains originate would make sense too, since they are likely to be the ones to deal with outbreaks in that country.

Our own DoD runs many labs....which probably wouldn't shock anyone. The military drives much of the research as a security issue.

Just sayin' probably not a lot to see here folks. Please move on.

Edit: I don't know who authored this. Perhaps a microbiologist or infectious disease specialist. but I researched several of these statements and found enough truth that I wanted to share.

The author lacks a basic understanding of immunology, genetics, and virology, but some of their statements happen to be correct. Most importantly, humans do lack immunity as well as vaccines and effective drugs.

Seasonal flu could have originated in an animal during the millennia prior to human history, evolving during that time to adapt to its new host. A virus that kills everyone it infects will soon find itself without hosts. It needs hosts to reproduce itself, so any mutants that produce milder symptoms will have a selective advantage over those that produce more severe ones. The same will likely happen with this coronavirus. Over time, it will become less deadly and come to be regarded as a "human" virus. But that will take far too long to save any of us.

Nucleic acids are remarkably similar among animal, and even plant and fungus, species down to the sequence level. They're also not very stable outside of the cellular compartments they inhabit. In particular, RNA is especially unstable. It needs to be in order to fulfill its role of conveying information from genes to proteins. In any case, it's mainly viral DNA we have to worry about. (Some viruses are capable of integrating into their hosts' genomes. When they're excised, they can carry a bit of host genetic material into new infectious particles. Don't believe this type of virus does that.) Host antibodies are unlikely to target these unstable molecules. Antibodies generally bind to proteins on the surface of virus particles, clumping them together so that white blood cells can absorb them.

It's worth pointing out that many recent epidemics are caused by viruses that were allowed to incubate as a direct result of our exploitation of animals. This one in a wild animal market, others in factory farms. If we didn't do these things, there would be far fewer to worry about.

remember the Seige of Caffa?

Everything before the 14th century is a blur. :smoke:

It would definitely be a doomsday type of weapon. The user would need to be prepared to sustain heavy casualties. Still, it could have appeal for non-state actors of the sort that employ suicide bombers.

My sister reminded me that I was extremely fortunate with regards to my cancer surgery in December. It was basically an emergency situation as in It would have been a disaster had I not been admitted right away. I could have easily died. I’ve read they’re delaying oncological surgeries due to the corona virus. Man, I really dodged a bullet. I guess I’m still considered high risk. So, I’m isolating somewhat. The whole situation is scary.

Nope, that was me....see below! hahaha
