A little of burr porn for you. Thuya Omni Square. This was the third attempt the first couple developed cracks.
It's turning out way too time consuming. Shame as it looks great.

A couple of stems.
First one is a follow on from the Black and White Ebony with an exposed condenser.
Honey Bee acrylic with a Blackwood.
R4Ulxxk.jpg

A Kingwood one which failed when I took it off the bushings, my fault. Not to let it go to waste I followed with the addition of a Blackwood 'hot end' and a thin brass accent.

I had no idea what was going on in the BW until I stopped the lathe and saw this little inclusion.

Also had time to try out a sleeve for the Eraser project @Pipes has been working on, still needs a bit of work until I'm happy with it.
Pipes stem and internals with a Wenge sleeve fitted, just having a chuckle to myself as I type that wood species imagining @Squiby reading it and feeling the urge to shout it out loud.

On top of a Coolfire 4, just for a bit of scale until I get an RX2/3. Really looking forward to experiencing how well it all performs, by all accounts it's giving other on demand convection devices a run for their money.

Still waiting as patiently as possible for some other bits and bobs to arrive from further afield but given the mass hysteria the 420 sales cause I suppose a little delay can be forgiven.
So for now here's a some Blackwood and Indian Summer blanks.
dUZc9I6.jpg

Enjoyed turning this and applying a finish, and then digging said finish out of the eyes. Just a teaser for now. I'm sure the person who gets it will post some better shots.

Anything I make in this style has a full length condenser, which I can't drill a carb in. The tooling I have isn't accurate enough and the drills just wonder on the SS surface making a mess of the wood.

As this material hasn't been used this way before, as far as I know, I sought a bit of feedback on the first couple of pieces I turned.

This was the reply I got 'It gets used a lot mate, it's the one everyone asks about, man'. Thanks @Rastavapa.

Again they both have full length condensers.

@momofthegoons I'll be sure and get some fotos of the new ones as I make them.

Had an itch to scratch, no one makes any nice shallow wooden bowls.
You can buy new ones for other purposes but none of the ones I've seen look right, this one may not look right to some.

You start off with a big chunk of wood and there has to be some kind of mess getting it down to the final shape.
First attempt at a bowl since school. Scottish Yew.

aC8VwXw.jpg

It's just under 4 1/2", 114mm diameter and stands 1 3/8", 35mm tall. Any and all ideas and suggestions are always welcome.

Well I'm super happy with this one:

Goes perfectly with my MFLB Orbiter.

Beautiful work there Phatt's, I lost 1.5hrs after my first use resulted in me just sitting there twirling it in my hands staring at the pretty patterns.

Love it!

It's like a rocket ship trying to break a black holes orbit....

@GreenHopper I do like the look of the Indian Summer paired with the Orbiter.
Mrs. PP actually read out the bit about lost time to me, must admit I had a little chuckle.

Thanks @momofthegoons I've got some other bowl ideas and as they aren't something I would use any input is welcome.

No 'off cut' goes to waste, even at under 10mm thick, and I'd been meaning to try this out for a while.
Blackwood and M3 Cobaltium with A&W can Aluminium accents.
pMo0DCG.jpg

The finishing has to be done in stages. Mask off the Mokume and sand the wood, then once it's done the wood gets masked and the Mokume gets done. Quick wipe over with a little bit of Iso and apply a couple of coats of wood finish.

How a stem is born.
Blackwood, Thuya Square with brass accents. No finished article pictures until after it lands with the lady who ordered it.
The Thuya gets a 5mm hole put thru it, which as you can see wonders. The hole is perfectly centred on the way in but not on the way out.
HlrWdOwm.jpg
5Z3UrcHm.jpg

This wouldn't all go together square so it gets put on a custom mandrel and the diameter reduced until the hole is centred.
vqSQP3Um.jpg
65QvUM1m.jpg

I can then square the ends so the joints fit well, in my new favorite piece of tooling. A collet chuck. This allows me to remove, replace and turn around the cylinder at will and it is always centred. The hot end and MP get a tap run thru them for the internal threads.
XGU3aJDm.jpg
pQAeSfLm.jpg
ZwSMAjbm.jpg

The collets go from 2mm to 20mm so I use it to hold the condenser while I put a thread on it.
Condenser gets screwed in and the pieces get put assembled.
U12BZAcm.jpg
umYZ5oKm.jpg

The whole thing then gets screwed together, you can see the PVA type glue at the joints, I also smear a small amount on the outside of the SS to prevent it all spinning when the chisels make contact. To much pressure and I'll end up with the centre sections failing.

Thanks @momofthegoons, I'm more than happy to share how I go about things.
Plenty of pictures help others to see what's gone into a stem, how complex they are and that I am trying to make them as 'safe' and easy clean as possible.

Unfortunately they also show me just how long things take to do. I'm already producing probably the most expensive stems available on the market, as far as I know, but believe me when I say I get minimum wage or less most of the time.

I will get quicker and my hourly will go up, but for now I'll keep my prices realistic and enjoying the ride.

My week has gone from bad to fanfukintastic.
Sorry to anyone who hasn't enjoyed this week as much and there is a thread where you can tell me that you're not happy I've had such a great time. I won't be offended.

Monday I dropped things, spilled things, then promptly broke things which were so close to being finished, so I threw in the towel and did some menial stuff.
This involved putting a new steel roof on another shed, which lead to some blood loss and the roof looking like a mini crime scene.

The week progresses and I get some other stuff done, the postman arrives a couple of times with bundles of joy.

My new chuck and collets, some tube and some fantastic wood, the supplier will be getting repeat custom.

I get the Blackwood and Thuya Square done and I'm well chuffed. My weeks picked up.

Then a green package. Things that make you go MMM.

I've got PM's to answer and having conversations with @Ed's TnT and @Mojo.
I see some fantastic Cocobolo boxes at a show in PR, global communications gotta love 'em.
Some wood on the way for a couple of stems to match a Bog Oak WS, and I'm getting some Tony's Seasoning and Hot Tamales.
Food, wood and cinnamon. I'm made up.

I'm now proper on one and Mrs. PP can see it, I get told to behave as we have to pick up a very close friend who's husband died a year ago to the day, he's dearly missed and as it's the first year it's all a bit sad. They have been like Mrs. PP's Mother and Father.

But that ain't gonna stop me, I'm buzzing. My DV delivery was the icing on the cake, the cherry on top came later.

Out of the blue a customer from a month or so ago emails me, Krom, just to let me know that another Blackwood and Thuya stem I did for him is still being very much enjoyed.
Wow, I know no news is good news and all that, and I get a kick out of seeing and hearing when people post about a stem I've made, but out the blue and an email not a post in a thread, a bit more personal. For me anyway.

So as you can imagine I'm still on one, I think if every week was like this I'd explode. That's if Mrs. PP hadn't roofied me before then.

Cocobolo Daddy Long Toke stem, you've no idea how much I was hoping that this blank had the same character when turned.
